May is National Foster Care Month. For those of you who don't know, in addition to being a Professional Organizer, I am a licensed clinical social worker. For a number of years, I worked at The Village for Families and Children in Hartford, CT. I was a therapist in a program called the Safe Home which is a short-term shelter for youth involved with the State social service system who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect. We worked hard to place these children back with their families if it was feasible or we found them loving foster homes. It was a difficult, but rewarding job and The Village has always had a special place in my heart.
The Village provides a full range of services for families and children including mental health treatment, adoption and foster care, as well as community support services. I share all of this with you, to let folks know that The Village has three volunteer-run Auxiliaries in the state of CT located in Glastonbury, Simsbury and Suffied. The Auxiliary supports The Village's mission and projects by selling new and gently used clothing, accessories, antiques, collectibles, toys and household items in its Second Chance Shops.
Second Chance Shops:

I try to support these Auxiliaries when I can and I encourage my clients to as well or to find a charity that's near and dear to their heart. It's great when you know your no longer used items can make such a difference to others. The three Auxiliaries have contributed more than $870,000 to The Village in the past two decades. That's a big difference!
