Why You Should Attend CT's 3rd Annual Conference on Hoarding

With March being National Social Work Month and CT's Annual Hoarding Conference only two months away, I thought this was the perfect time to give you a peek of what's in store for participants. 


For those who don't know, I have been a member of the Connecticut Hoarding Working Group since 2015. A therapist colleague of mine knowing my background as a social worker and my skills in organizing thought this would be a perfect group to get involved in. And she was right!


The aim of this multidisciplinary group is to

1) study issues related to hoarding

2) review current methods used by various public agencies to address hoarding

3) identify barriers faced by public agencies to intervene and assist persons who compulsively hoard

4) create a framework to coordinate the efforts among state and local public agencies to address the public safety and health issues associated with hoarding


The group has about 300 members representing more than 70 municipalities and a diverse assortment of professional disciplines.


Since the spring of 2015, we've conducted an annual conference on hoarding in the month of May.

Our first conference was titled "When a House is Not a Home."

Our second conference was titled "Making a House a Home Again."

And our third conference will be titled "A Community Response to Hoarding."


This year's conference is scheduled for:

THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2017

8:00AM - 4:00PM



What makes this year's conference unique is that we'll be starting off the day presenting a mock case of a person with hoarding disorder in the community. From there panels of presenters will be speaking about their roles and how they would intervene in regards to the case. These will include:

  • First Responders
  • Building Code Officials
  • Department of Children and Families (DCF) 
  • Elder Care Services 
  • Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) 
  • Animal Control  
  • Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS) 
  • Local Social Service Departments 
  • Professional Organizers  
  • Probate Court 

to name a few!


Continuing Education Credits are being sought for mental health professionals as well as building and code officials. Persons struggling with compulsive hoarding as well as family members are welcome to attend. 


This conference will truly highlight the far-reaching effects of a hoarded home within a community and the who, what, when, why, and how of different agencies and departments who get involved. It'll give a nice bird's eye view of how everyone intersects with one another on state and local levels.


I'm beyond excited for this conference especially because the National Association of Professional Organizers, CT Chapter (NAPO-CT) will be highlighted. I'm lucky enough to be spearheading the presentation to a crowd of over 300!

  • What a wonderful group that you're involved in, Sarah! It's great to see so many different types of disciplines coming together to help those with hoarding behavior. I don't know if it is or will be useful, but there are many resources available on the ICD (Institute for Challenging Disorganization) site about hoarding including teleclasses, publications, fact sheets and the ICD Clutter-Hoarding Scale. Many of these are free.

    • @Linda Samuels: Linda, I am a member of ICD and find their online courses on hoarding disorder to be valuable. A Pro Organizer colleague of mine who is our ICD ambassador (Ann Zanon) will be at the conference with me as well and she has plans to hand out ICD material!

  • The eldercare topic is a passion of mine seeing first-hand how many elderly individuals and couples live with lots of stuff in their homes. And, as they get older, they aren't as active as they were which makes it even difficult to declutter and downsize. It's awesome that you are incorporating this topic into the conference. Good luck and I hope it goes well.

  • So proud of you representing NAPO at this conference - this is important work. The more we talk about it, the less shame associated with it. There are ways to support those going through this experience. Love that everyone is pulling together! YOU will be a great speaker - I know from experience!
